Spencer Brook Youth Orchestra Since 1985 the Spencer Brook Youth Orchestra has provided young musicians the opportunity to make music together, in an atmosphere of fun and friendship. The Spencer Brook program is based in Concord, MA. Rehearsals are held on Saturdays at the Emerson Umbrella— 40 Stow St, Concord, MA, under the direction of our conductor, Paul Leder. Junior Orchestra meets from 9:00-10:00 AM; Senior Orchestra meets from 10:30 AM-12:30 PM. Our fall orchestra term begins on Saturday, September 13th and concludes with a concert on December 14th.
Orchestra rehearsals resume on January 3rd to prepare for the 17th annual Vivaldi Festival Concert, held on February 8th. The term continues after the February school vacation with rehearsals for our spring concert on May 17th. Recent programs have included music of Mozart, Grieg,
Elgar, and Duke Ellington.
The Senior orchestra is a full orchestra, strings and winds. Admission to the Senior Orchestra is by audition. String students should be able to play pieces in four sharps and flats. They need to know how to shift positions, and be working on vibrato and a variety of bow strokes. Wind players should be able to play repertoire on the level of the Senior District audition pieces. Auditions will be held by appointment. For more information, click here.
The Junior orchestra is just for string students. Students should be able to read music, and to play pieces in keys up to three sharps or two flats. No audition is required; admission is based on the recommendation of the private teacher.
Placement in either orchestra is based on a combination of playing ability, musical experience, determination, and age. Generally, Senior Orchestra is for 7-12th grade players; Junior Orchestra is for 3rd-6th graders.
